VoLTE & Vo5G
DSPs offer a power-efficient solution to voice and media processing in LTE and 5G networks
Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) and Voice-over 5G (Vo5G) describes the voice services of next-generation wireless networks that use the data connectivity of the respective network for voice calls rather than providing a voice connection over a 2G or 3G connection.
While the headline benefits of 4G and 5G networks are about downloading, streaming and web browsing, it can also be used to improve voice calls. Providing voice services over a data network in this way offers benefits to both telecom service providers and consumers.
Vo5G is likely to evolve from a transition from VoLTE (Voice over LTE) to VoNR (Voice over New Radio) services. The 3GPP standard specifies that 5G uses the 4G voice/video communication architecture and therefore continues to provide these services via the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem).
Using high performance digital signal processors (DSPs), SMART Embedded Computing enables network operators and telecom service providers to deploy VoLTE and Vo5G capabilities quickly and cost-effectively. DSPs offer a power-efficient solution to voice and media processing in LTE and 5G networks.
The SMART EC PCIE-8120 media processing accelerator add-in card enables high density voice and video processing to be integrated into a rack mounted server or other network appliances that have full size PCI Express slots.
By employing highly efficient digital signal processors (DSP) to provide direct offload of the host CPU, the PCIE-8120 acceleration engine can take the place of additional servers when adding high density voice processing to an application. Network equipment providers can either add or substantially increase the voice channel processing density within existing systems, so reducing overall power and space demands for their equipment as it scales to higher throughput.
The SMART EC ATCA-8330 is a combination of an Intel® Xeon® server CPU and a media processing array based on the Octasic OCT2224M multi-core DSP with comprehensive media processing software suite.
The ATCA-8330 blade brings high density DSPs with embedded voice and video firmware from Octasic together with SMART EC’s strong ATCA system heritage and thermal design skill, resulting in an industry-leading media processing density for the next generation of voice processing systems.
Combining a server and accelerated media processing on a single blade minimizes the amount of hardware required. A modular design allows the blade to be scaled 4 DSPs at a time, up to 40 DSPs, to match application requirements.
